Guardian” reports: Cyprus discovered a new strain of the combination of two coronavirus variants Omicron and Delta, named “Deltacron”.

Picture: On December 29 last year, medical staff in Cyprus conducted a rapid test for the new coronavirus.

On January 9, Leondios Kostrikis, Professor of Biological Sciences and Director of the Laboratory of Biotechnology and Molecular Virology at the University of Cyprus, stated that a combination of A mixed strain of Delta and omicron.

The report said that so far, Kostrikis and his team have found 25 cases of new variants.

Among them, 11 samples were from people hospitalized with the new coronavirus, and 14 samples were from the general population.

Scientists have named it Deltacron .

The results of the analysis by the Kostrikis team showed that compared with non-hospitalized patients, the frequency of infection with this new strain was relatively higher in patients hospitalized for the COVID-19.

He believes that in hospitalized patients, the frequency of mutations is higher, which may mean that there is a correlation between’Delta Cron’ and hospitalization.

When the Omicron variant began to spread rapidly, scientists from many countries warned that if someone infects Delta and Omicron at the same time, a new and more dangerous super variant may be produced.

Paul Burton, Chief Medical Officer of Moderna, stated that these two mutant strains simultaneously infect the same cell and provide them with an opportunity.

He said: “This phenomenon is called Recombination, which means they can start sharing and exchanging genes to synthesize a new strain.”

Kostrikis said in an interview with Sigma TV on Friday: “We will see in the future whether this strain is more pathological or more infectious, or whether it will exceed the two main strains, Delta and Omicron. ” But he personally believes that this strain will eventually be replaced by the highly contagious Omicron variant.

Omicron infects the upper respiratory tract more

It is also reported that after Omicron was first discovered in South Africa in November last year, a multinational scientific team observed that compared with other variant viruses, Omicron has a stronger transmission power, but has a lower chance of causing severe illness. As the number of people infected with Omicron increases,

more and more studies confirm this observation. Research results published by the University of Cambridge and the University of Hong Kong last month showed that this feature may be due to Omicron’s tendency to infect bronchial tubes rather than invade human lung cells.

Gupta, a virologist at the University of Cambridge, said that the large number of new coronaviruses in the lower respiratory tract is the main cause of severe illness, and the bronchus is the channel connecting the trachea and the lungs.

David Diamond, a viral immunologist at Washington University in St. Louis, said that the results of animal experiments on hamsters showed that Omicron tends to infect the upper respiratory tract of hamsters, but does not affect their lungs.

The research team also found that hamsters infected with Omicron had milder symptoms than hamsters infected with other early variants. The results of the study were published on December 29 last year.

This finding is consistent with the clinical manifestations of patients diagnosed with Omicron in South Africa. Jasat, a public health expert at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases in Johannesburg, South Africa, said: “We have not found any patients with COVID-19 disease who were admitted to the hospital with severe illness or pulmonary complications.”

However, there are still many mysteries surrounding Omicron that have not been clarified.

For example, it is not clear how Omicron affects people who have not been vaccinated, those who have been vaccinated, or who have been infected with antibodies and have produced antibodies.

The researchers also said that although Omicron’s hospitalization rate and the need for a ventilator are relatively low, the number of related cases is still increasing.

It is too early to conclude that Omicron is less lethal than other variants.

The number of people killed in the UK epidemic exceeds 150,000

The United Kingdom, which has been affected by the Omricron virus, notified more than 146,000 new confirmed cases in a single day on the 8th, and 313 more patients died.

This became the seventh infection after the United States, Brazil, India, Russia, Mexico and Peru. Countries where the death toll exceeded 150,000.

British Prime Minister Johnson stated that the country has suffered huge loss of life due to the COVID-19 epidemic, and emphasized that the best way for the UK to get rid of the epidemic is to ensure that everyone is vaccinated and boosted.
