Due to the super infectivity of the Omicron variant virus, infectious disease experts pointed out that the N95 mask can best protect the Omicron variant virus, and the protection of ordinary surgical masks against the virus is already very weak. However, N95 masks are more expensive, which will increase the economic burden of the people.

U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, along with more than 50 Democratic lawmakers, introduced a bill today (Wednesday, January 12) to distribute free N95 masks to all Americans to promote better protection for the public.

According to reports, the bill will allocate $5 billion to promote mask production and use the U.S. Postal System to distribute three N95 masks to everyone. The bill also plans to set up distribution points in places such as schools and bus stops.

“As we face the fast-spreading Omicron variant, we should remember that not all masks are created equal,” Sanders said in a statement. “Congress must mandate mass production and distribution of N95 masks, which is preventing the One of the most efficient ways the coronavirus spreads. It’s an absolute scandal that frontline workers, healthcare workers, and all Americans in the richest country in the world don’t have easy access to high-quality masks.”

Earlier, Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said on Wednesday that her agency would not change its mask guidelines, urging Americans to wear N95 or KN95 masks, which are more protective, in her view.

Although these masks are more protective, they are not comfortable enough to make them wear them for a long time.

Separately, private insurers will have to pay for over-the-counter coronavirus testing starting Saturday (January 15), according to a plan announced by the Biden administration on Monday.

The program was launched to make infection screening affordable to better control the spread of Omicron.

Under a new policy announced by the White House, individuals covered by health insurance plans who purchased FDA-authorized, approved or approved over-the-counter COVID-19 test kits will have their insurance covered starting Saturday.

Insurers are required to pay eight free over-the-counter at-home test kits for each insured person per month.

For example, a family of four all on the same plan, their health plan can pay for up to 32 such tests per month.
