In the new study, the research team used existing meta-analyses and data from the Global Burden of Disease study to build a model that instantly assesses the impact of a range of dietary changes on life expectancy .

With this calculation tool, select previous dietary patterns and converted dietary patterns (including whole grains, fish, processed meats, nuts, red meats, legumes, milk, vegetables, fruits, sugar-sweetened beverages, refined grains, eggs , white meat and oil intake) , region (currently divided into China, Europe, Norway, and the United States) , age at start, and gender, the changes in life expectancy from switching dietary patterns can be derived.

 

The biggest contributors to increasing life expectancy were eating more legumes , more whole grains , more nuts , and eating less red meat and less processed meat .

For young Americans , the computational model estimates that a sustained shift from a typical Western-style diet to an optimized diet starting at age 20 would increase life expectancy by 10.7 years for women and 13.0 years for men .

Switching diets from age 40 increased life expectancy by 10.0 years for women and 11.7 years for men.

For older Americans, switching diets starting at age 60 can still significantly increase life expectancy, specifically adding 8.0 years to life expectancy for women and 8.8 years to overdue life for men.

Even switching diets at age 80 can increase life expectancy by 3.4 years.

 

For young Chinese , the computational model estimates that a sustained shift from a typical Western-style diet to an optimized diet starting at age 20 would increase life expectancy by 10.6 years for women and 12.9 years for men .

Switching diets from age 40 increased life expectancy by 10.2 years for women and 12.0 years for men.

Switching diets from age 60 increased life expectancy for women by 8.6 years and men by 9.3 years, and switching diets from age 80 increased life expectancy for women by 3.4 years and men by 3.1 years.

Many previous studies have shown that specific dietary patterns are beneficial to health, but the overall impact of dietary changes on health and longevity remains poorly understood, and the computational model built in this study partially bridges that gap.
