21:0 FDA panel unanimously approved to recommend approval of two COVID-19 vaccines for children.
Just now, after careful discussion, the FDA panel unanimously approved (21:0) to recommend approval of these two vaccines for children.
‘We have to be careful not to be numb to the death toll of children because of the disproportionate death toll in the elderly,’ Dr. Peter Marks of the FDA said at today’s meeting of the FDA’s external vaccine panel.
According to the CDC, the rate of hospitalizations for children during Omicron was worse than any flu season in recent years.
Since January 2020, Covid-19 has killed 202 children aged 6 months to 5 years. Children under the age of 5 are the only age group in the United States that cannot be vaccinated, and many parents have been waiting a long time.
Moderna vaccine:
- for children from 6 months to 5 years old;
- 2 injections in total, 25 micrograms per injection, completed in one month;
- about 40% protection against symptomatic infection;
- Anxious parents are advised to choose this vaccine.
Pfizer vaccines:
- for children from 6 months to 4 years old;
- 3 injections in total, 3 micrograms per injection, 2nd and 3rd injections every 3 weeks and 8 weeks, after three months;
- Early data suggest around 80% protection against symptomatic infection (but this number is likely to change).
The government has been preparing to popularize the vaccine for children, and children may be vaccinated as early as next Tuesday, June 21.
