According the report on February 17 that the Taliban has demanded that the sale of contraceptives be stopped in the Afghan capital Kabul and Mazar-i-Sharif. Taliban militants are going door-to-door ordering pharmacies to empty the shelves of contraceptives and devices.

Pharmacists in Kabul and Mazar-i-Sharif confirmed they were ordered not to stock any contraceptives in pharmacies.

According to sources, some Taliban militants threatened: “The use of contraception is the Western agenda. The Western concept of population control should not be promoted.”

As of now, the Taliban Ministry of Public Health has not issued any official statement on the incident. The UNFPA representative in Afghanistan also declined to comment.

According to the report, a report released by Human Rights Watch in 2021 showed that most Afghan women do not have access to basic information related to reproductive health; due to lack of care, pregnant women also face extremely high reproductive risks.

Statistics show that Afghanistan is one of the most dangerous countries for childbearing in the world, with one out of every 14 women dying from pregnancy-related factors.

According to Al Jazeera’s previous reports, since the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan on August 15, 2021, they have repeatedly issued measures to restrict women’s rights, including requiring women to completely cover themselves in public, prohibiting women from working for NGOs and prohibiting women from accepting university education etc.

The United Nations sent two missions to Afghanistan in January to urge the Taliban government to withdraw some laws restricting women’s rights.
