Lead Levels Exceeding 92.8 Times the Safety Limit Found in Body Paint Cosmetics Sold on AliExpress, Seoul City Investigation Reveals
An investigation by Seoul city has found that body paint cosmetics sold on the Chinese e-commerce platform AliExpress contain lead levels exceeding the Korean safety standard by 92.8 times.
Seoul city officials announced on the 12th that they conducted a safety inspection on 146 products, including hygiene items, cosmetics, dishware, and clothing sold on platforms like AliExpress, Temu, and SHEIN. Harmful substances were found in 11 cosmetic products.
One of the body paint products sold on AliExpress was found to contain lead at levels 92.8 times higher than the safety limit. Another body paint product sold on SHEIN contained lead levels 3.8 times higher and nickel levels 1.4 times higher than the standard. These body paints are commonly used for performances and events.
A Seoul city representative stated, “Exposure to heavy metals like lead increases the risk of cancer, while nickel can trigger allergic reactions.”
Additionally, nine types of body glitter sold on AliExpress were found to contain antimony levels up to five times the safety standard, and one product contained methanol at 43.2 times the limit. Body glitter is typically used to add sparkle to the skin for events or social media photos.
The official added, “Antimony can cause metal allergies and skin rashes, while methanol can irritate the eyes and respiratory system.”
In response to these findings, Seoul city plans to request the relevant authorities and overseas e-commerce platforms to halt the sale of the 11 products that do not meet Korean safety standards.
Kim Tae-hee, the head of Seoul’s Public Health Bureau, emphasized, “Special caution is needed for these products as they are cosmetics applied directly to the body.”
