Harvard: Half a Spoon of Olive Oil Daily Can Reduce Dementia Death Risk by 28%.
With over 55 million people worldwide suffering from dementia, few things are more heart-wrenching than witnessing loved ones grapple with this condition.
A recent study has ignited hope by revealing that regular consumption of olive oil can reduce the risk of developing dementia by 28%.
Dementia encompasses various forms, including Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal dementia. However, for patients and their families and friends, dealing with memory loss is agonizing.
This extensive study involved tracking participants for 30 years through periodic surveys assessing their dietary habits. The results showed that regardless of the quality of their diets, individuals who consumed half a tablespoon or more of olive oil daily had a 28% lower risk of dying from dementia compared to those who rarely or never consumed olive oil.
Furthermore, substituting olive oil for a teaspoon of salad dressing or artificial butter could reduce the risk of dementia by 8% to 14%.
Dr. Anne-Julie Tessier, a postdoctoral researcher at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, emphasized that this study reinforces dietary guidelines recommending the use of olive oil and other plant-based oils. It confirms that these recommendations are not only beneficial for heart health but also contribute to brain health. She stated that replacing artificial butter and commercial salad dressings with natural ingredients like olive oil is a safe choice that can reduce the risk of dementia and its deadly consequences.
It’s important to note that not all olive oils offer the same health benefits. The key lies in “extra-virgin” olive oil. Additionally, choosing certified organic products can enhance the positive effects.
