Health Crisis in Gaza: Thousands Affected by Contagious Diseases Amidst Ongoing Conflict
Thousands experience jaundice symptoms, a surge in diarrhea cases! Contagious diseases spreading! WHO issues warning.
As Israel’s military operations persist in the Gaza Strip, the region now has 1.9 million displaced people, with many seeking refuge in overcrowded schools and healthcare facilities. Additionally, numerous individuals are cramped in makeshift tents. The World Health Organization recently issued a warning, expressing deep concern over the escalating threat of infectious diseases in the Gaza Strip.
The WHO cautioned on the 19th that due to limited testing conditions, 24 cases of Hepatitis A have been confirmed, but thousands exhibiting jaundice symptoms are also believed to be associated with Hepatitis A. This suggests that the spread of Hepatitis A is likely much broader than indicated by current testing.
Currently, the Gaza Strip faces an extreme shortage of clean water. Since November of last year, UNICEF has been warning that children in the southern Gaza Strip can only access 1.5 to 2 liters of clean water per day, far below the recognized minimum humanitarian standard of 7 liters. These children and their families are compelled to consume contaminated water, resulting in a sharp increase in cases of diarrhea among children in the Gaza Strip, with cases in children under 5 being 25 times higher than reported before the conflict.
In the southern border city of Rafah, the population has surged from around 300,000 before the conflict to approximately 1.3 million amidst ongoing hostilities. Most people reside in tents, exacerbating the occurrence of diseases.
Some displaced individuals are crowded into shelters where, due to overcrowding and unsanitary conditions, skin infections including scabies have emerged, along with symptoms such as “chest infections, respiratory infections,” and others.
The WHO previously warned that if the healthcare system in the Gaza Strip is not restored, the number of deaths due to diseases in the area may surpass those caused by bombings.
