Parasite “4-pole Nucleated Sporozoite” Detected – 24 People Experience Symptoms in Okayama.
Japan Okayama Prefecture has announced that 24 people who consumed dishes served in accommodation facilities and restaurants in Yakage Town are experiencing symptoms of food poisoning.
The affected prefecture has imposed a four-day business suspension on the establishments serving the food starting on Dec 11.
According to the Okayama Prefecture Health and Hygiene Division, the incidents of food poisoning occurred at “Kachofugetsu,” located within the Yakage-ya accommodation facility in Yakage Town, and the affiliated restaurant “Yakage Hojo Akatsuki no Kura.”

The health authorities were informed by the Bitchu Health Center on the 8th of this month, and upon investigation, it was revealed that 11 people who dined at “Kachofugetsu” on the 7th complained of symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea.
Similarly, 13 people who dined at “Yakage Hojo Akatsuki no Kura” on the 9th also exhibited similar symptoms. Fortunately, all 24 individuals are reported to be recovering.
Upon examining the ingredients, Okayama Prefecture found the parasite “4-pole Nucleated Sporozoite” causing food poisoning in Spanish mackerel sashimi. The suspected cause of the incident is believed to be the consumption of Spanish mackerel sashimi, and further investigations are underway.
Okayama Prefecture has imposed a four-day business suspension on the two dining establishments, effective from today until December 14.
The prefecture advises thorough inspection for parasites’ cysts (small white grains a few millimeters in size) when preparing raw fish dishes in Okayama Prefecture.
