A Young Chinese Woman Died in South Korea after Cosmetic Surgery
A Chinese woman in her 20s died in South Korea after undergoing cosmetic surgery – three procedures in two weeks.
The increasing trend of Chinese individuals opting for beauty enhancements in South Korea has been accompanied by a rise in medical mishaps, occasionally resulting in tragic fatalities.
South Korean authorities recently disclosed that the young woman underwent liposuction at a plastic surgery clinic in the Gangnam district of Seoul, where the surgical site became infected, leading to her demise on January 10.
The family of the deceased has filed a complaint with the South Korean police, suspecting the clinic of culpable negligence. The South Korean police are currently conducting an investigation into the matter.
This unfortunate incident is not isolated, as similar cases have been reported. In January 2023, another Chinese woman in her 20s died in the same Gangnam district after undergoing surgery at a plastic surgery clinic, experiencing cardiac arrest. In 2020, a woman from Hong Kong died in South Korea due to anesthesia complications during cosmetic surgery.
Additionally, in 2016, a 29-year-old woman from Tianjin, northern China, suffered brain damage and fell into a vegetative state after undergoing surgery at a plastic surgery clinic in Seoul. The South Korean court ruled the hospital responsible, assigning 70% of the liability and ordering compensation of 1.08 billion Korean Won to the victim and her family.
On the 19th, the Chinese Embassy in South Korea issued precautionary guidelines for Chinese nationals seeking cosmetic surgery in South Korea, emphasizing the importance of discerning medical institutions and intermediaries.
They also provided contact information for inquiries to the Korean Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (KSAPS), the Korean Medical Dispute Mediation and Arbitration Agency, and consular protection requests to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs worldwide.
