16 COVID-19 variants South Africa newly discovered have spread a year ago.  On February 3, The Paper learned that a paper recently published by “Nature-Medical” stated that 16 new variants of the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) were discovered in South Africa. Most of these variants are Unique variation not found elsewhere.

The new study found that these 16 variants of the COVID-19 virus had spread in South Africa from March 6 to August 26, 2020, about a year ago. Three of the 16 variants-B.1.1.54, B.1.1.56 and C.1, spread widely in the first wave of outbreaks in South Africa, causing about 42% of the infections in the country at that time.

As of the end of August 2020, the C.1 variant virus has spread most widely in South Africa.

According to the paper, the COVID-19 epidemic in South Africa is serious. By the end of November 2020, more than 785,000 people have been infected, accounting for about 50% of all known infections in Africa; more than 20,000 people have died.

Genomic epidemiology is used to understand the evolution of the new coronavirus and to track global spread. The aforementioned virus variants were discovered after a near-whole genome analysis of 1,365 new coronaviruses isolated in South Africa.

Researchers Houriiyah Tegally, Tulio de Oliveira and colleagues completed the aforementioned research work. They concluded in the paper that this type of genome monitoring is essential for the discovery of the 501Y.V2 variant in South Africa in December 2020. This genome monitoring can be used on a large scale in Africa to identify new variants of the new coronavirus and provide information for controlling the spread of the virus.

The corresponding author Tulio de Oliveira is from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa.

According to reports, on December 18, 2020, a new coronavirus variant was detected in South Africa with the N501Y mutation. South Africa named it the 501Y.V2 variant, which spread rapidly in three provinces in South Africa. As of December 30, 2020, the variant has been discovered in four countries outside of South Africa.
