Study indicates that the antibody level after recovery from infection is higher than 3 shots of COVID-19 vaccines.
Government expert advisor, CUHK Chair Professor of Respiratory System David Hui Shu-cheong and his team conducted research to understand the impact of Omicron variant virus BA.2 on people who received different vaccines.
The results showed that the neutralizing antibody level of those who received three doses of BNT vaccine was higher than that of those who received three doses of SINOVAC vaccines, and those who received one shot after infection had higher antibody levels than those who received three doses of the same type of vaccine.
The study was conducted from February of the previous year to November of last year. One hundred and twenty test subjects were divided into six groups.
Among them, those who had not been diagnosed had received three doses of SINOVAC or three doses of BNT vaccine, or two doses of SINOVAC and one dose of BNT vaccine.
As for the confirmed patients, they are divided into those who have not been vaccinated, who have been vaccinated with SINOVAC after recovery, and those who have recovered with a dose of BNT vaccine.
The neutralization test (PRNT) was used to understand the effect of the Omicron BA.2 variant virus on neutralizing antibody levels in different individuals three to five weeks after the researchers received the last dose of the vaccine.
The results showed that people who had been infected and vaccinated with a single dose of BNT vaccine had the highest geometric mean titer (GMT) level of serum neutralizing antibodies, reaching 144.2, followed by those who received three doses of BNT vaccine, with a GMT level of 95.1. For those who had been infected and received one dose of SINOVAC, the GMT level was 28.3, while those who received three doses of SINOVAC had a GMT level of 9.5. For people who were infected but not vaccinated, the GMT level was 9.
The report pointed out that the level of antibodies against OmicronBA.2 was higher among those who received three doses of BNT vaccine than those who had received three doses of SINOVAC. Regardless of whether they were vaccinated with SINOVAC or BNT vaccine, those who received one shot after infection had higher antibody levels than those who received three shots of the same vaccine.
The study also showed that people who were not injected and infected had a higher chance of being infected with Omicron BA.1 after being infected with Omicron BA.2 due to insufficient cross-neutralizing antibodies.
