But even with just an intranasal infection with the new coronavirus, the hamsters experienced a dramatic drop in sperm count and testosterone from days 4 to 7, along with testicular shrinkage, volume and weight loss.

Serum sex hormone levels were significantly reduced 42 to 120 days after infection.

Acute inflammation, hemorrhage, necrosis of seminiferous tubules, and disruption of spermatogenesis occur in the testis.

Inflammation, degeneration, and necrosis of testicular tissue persisted from 7 to 120 days, and intranasal infection of Omicron and Delta mutants caused similar testicular changes.

However , hamsters infected with influenza virus H1N1 administered intranasally or intratestally showed no testicular infection or damage.

Yuan Guoyong’s team further inoculated the hamsters with inactivated virus vaccine, and then infected with the new coronavirus.

The results showed that there was no testicular histopathological damage, which showed that the COVID-19 vaccine effectively protected the testis from the infection of the new coronavirus and the possible damage caused by the COVID-19 virus. Complications of testicular injury.
