Mysterious Respiratory Illness in Dogs Spreads in United States
As the Christmas season approaches in the United States, there is a growing concern among pet owners as a mysterious respiratory illness in dogs continues to spread.
Dogs afflicted with this respiratory illness experience progressing respiratory symptoms, with coughing being a central feature. It has been noted that antibiotics are ineffective, and there have been reports of dogs developing pneumonia or even succumbing to the illness.
However, it’s important to note that this disease does not infect humans.
In Oregon, over 200 cases have been reported since mid-August. Similar cases of respiratory illness in dogs have also been confirmed in five other states: Colorado, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Illinois, and Massachusetts.
Nevertheless, details regarding the cause of the cough, its infectiousness, and the transmission pathway are still not fully understood.
According to an article in The Washington Post, Professor Amanda Cavanaugh of Colorado State University stated, “Most of the dogs with this cough have been identified as having been in doggy daycares or dog parks. There is a possibility that it spread among dogs gathering in groups.”
With the holiday season approaching, a time when travel increases, and many people utilize pet boarding services, experts recommend considering alternatives such as hiring a pet sitter rather than leaving pets in facilities where they may come into contact with other dogs. If boarding is unavoidable, pet owners are encouraged to ensure that preventive vaccinations, such as influenza shots, are administered in advance.
Furthermore, experts emphasize that providing proper nutrition and hydration to pets, much like humans, is the best preventive measure to enhance their resistance. They suggest that with thorough preventive measures, pet owners need not be overly anxious.
