What is interventional therapy? What can it do?

Interventional treatment is an emerging treatment method between surgery and internal medicine, including intravascular interventional and non-vascular interventional treatment, which integrates imaging diagnosis and clinical treatment. It has also made great progress in China in recent years. . After more than 30 years of development, interventional therapy has been called the three pillar disciplines together with traditional surgery and internal medicine.

To put it simply, interventional therapy is to make tiny channels with a diameter of several millimeters in blood vessels and skin without surgery to expose the lesions, or through the original pipelines of the human body, in imaging equipment (angiography, fluoroscopy, CT, MR , B-ultrasound) guided by the minimally traumatic treatment method for local lesions.

Interventional treatment technology classification

There are many techniques for interventional therapy. For example, according to the system to which the disease is treated, it can be subdivided into four categories: tumor intervention, peripheral vascular intervention, neurological intervention, and cardiovascular intervention. The scope of diagnosis and treatment in our department includes two major systems: tumor intervention and peripheral vascular intervention. For example, according to the different ways of interventional therapy into the target lesion, it can be more easily divided into “vascular intervention” and “non-vascular intervention”, which will be introduced in more detail in the science column of this WeChat platform.

What are the advantages of interventional therapy?

Accuracy: The interventional treatment is carried out under the guidance and monitoring of imaging equipment. It can accurately and directly reach the local lesion. Therefore, it has the advantages of precise positioning, safety and efficiency, and fewer complications. It has become the preferred treatment method for some diseases.

For example, the application of interventional therapy technology in tumor chemotherapy, thrombolysis, etc., has obvious advantages compared with traditional internal medicine-it can allow drugs to “pound the dragon” directly on the diseased area, greatly improving the disease The drug concentration can not only better ensure the curative effect, but also reduce the dosage of the drug, effectively avoiding the side effects of the drug on other body parts of the patient.

Minimally invasive: Interventional treatment is basically equivalent to “surgery without surgery”. The treatment can be completed without a invasive or only a few millimeters of skin incision, with minimal trauma; most operations only require local anesthesia, which greatly reduces the risk of anesthesia, especially Suitable for elderly and infirm patients;

High efficiency: Effective control of the scope of action of the drug, normal tissue damage, quick recovery, and short hospital stay; high surgical success rate and low mortality rate. According to relevant statistics, the current success rate of interventional therapy is as high as 90%, and the mortality rate is almost zero; For elderly critically ill patients who cannot tolerate surgery or patients who have no chance of surgery, interventional surgery can be an effective treatment.
