A miraculous eye drop was approved by the FDA recently, and it is possible to remove the reading glasses of 128 million Americans!

FDA approves the first reading eye drops

VUITY™ 1.25% (Pilocapine Hydrochloride Eye Drops) is the first mature eye drop approved by the FDA for the treatment of age-related adult myopia (presbyopia) , also known as presbyopia eye drops , a prescription drug. Does not affect long-distance vision.

How to use:

  • One drop in each eye can provide 6-10 hours of clear vision .
  • Apply one drop to each eye once a day .
  • If you use more than one drop of eye drops, take at least 5 minutes apart .

Effective time:

Takes effect in about 15 minutes

About 80 USD for 30 days

For people:

It works best for people aged 40-55

Side effects:

Side effects found in the 3-month trial included headaches and red eyes. It is expected to be well tolerated in the long term .

Using the proprietary pHast™ technology, VUITY can quickly adjust to the physiological pH of the tear film.

The main researcher of the experiment, Dr. George Waring, said that the natural ability of the eyes to shrink pupils was used to contract certain muscles in the eyes to help see things close by . “Reducing the pupil can expand the depth of field or focus, allowing people to naturally focus in a different range.”

Vuity is by no means a panacea, the manufacturer reminds:

  • People who are allergic to any ingredients, please do not use ;
  • Do not use at night driving or under low light conditions;
  • Suitable for mild to moderate cases;
  • After 65 years of age , as the eyes age, the effect will decrease;
  • The user may also have temporary difficulties when adjusting the focus of near and far objects;
  • Do not touch the tip of the dropper to any surface, as this may contaminate the contents;
  • If more than one topical eye drops are used, they must be separated by at least 5 minutes;
  • If your eyesight drops suddenly, you should seek medical attention immediately.

As of now, this drug is not covered by insurance .

The doctor interviewed by the reporter said that insurance is unlikely to cover it because it is not a “medical necessity” , after all, glasses are still cheaper.

But the advantages of this new drug are also very significant- you can go out with eye drops.

The measurement standard is the proportion of patients who obtained 3 or more readings in the nearsighted eye chart and lost more than 1 line in the hyperopic eye chart on the 30th day, that is, 3 hours after the medication .

This is only illustrative, not an actual nearsighted eye diagram.

Participants truly share the experience

The FDA approval is based on data from two key phase 3 clinical studies, GEMINI 1 and GEMINI 2, which evaluated the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of VUITY in the treatment of presbyopia.

In the two studies, a total of 750 presbyopia participants aged 40 to 55 were randomly assigned to VUITY or placebo at a 1:1 ratio.

Participants were asked to instill one drop of VUITY or placebo in each eye every day.

Both studies have achieved their goals. Compared with placebo , at the 3rd hour on the 30th day, a considerable proportion of the participants who received VUITY treatment had moderate (low light), high contrast, and binocular distance correction.

In terms of near vision (DCNVA), 3 or more lines of visual acuity chart were seen clearly , and the loss of corrected distance vision (CDVA) was not more than 1 line.

In two clinical studies, participants were receiving treatment VUITY found no serious adverse events , the most common adverse event frequencies greater than 5% were headache and jealous.

Toni Wright (Toni Wright) is one of the 750 clinical trial participants participating in the test. She said she likes everything that can be seen before her eyes. She told the media : ” This can definitely change lives .”

Before the experiment, the only way for her to see things clearly was to have reading glasses everywhere in the office, bathroom, kitchen, and car.

” I have been denying it, because for me, knowing that I need to wear glasses is a sign of getting older .”

In 2019, the doctor told her that she had a new eye drop that might temporarily correct her vision problems.

After the experience, she did feel the difference: ” I don’t need reading glasses anymore, especially on the computer. I always need to wear them.

Jag Dosanjh, Senior Vice President of Allergan Medical Therapy, a subsidiary of AbbVie, said: “We are very pleased to bring this first-of-its-kind treatment to the market earlier than expected, benefiting millions of American patients with presbyopia. This reflects our commitment to advance vision care. The promise has expanded our leading treatment portfolio for eye care staff and patients.”

Presbyopia, or age-related fuzzy myopia, is a common progressive eye disease that reduces the eye’s ability to focus on near objects and usually affects people over 40.

In non-presbyopic eyes, the transparent lens behind the iris can change shape, focusing light on the retina, making it easier for people to see nearby things. In presbyopia, the transparent lens becomes hard and does not easily change shape, making it difficult to focus on nearby objects.
