Investigation: Most Health Affected by “Red Yeast Rice” Incident Show Symptoms of Fanconi Syndrome
The Japanese Society of Nephrology announced on April 9 that a survey of consumers who suffered health damage after taking problematic health supplements from Japan’s Kobayashi Pharmaceutical company showed that most of them exhibited symptoms of Fanconi syndrome, with three-quarters of patients experiencing improvement after discontinuation.
The Society revealed the survey results during a press conference held jointly with the Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare. The survey targeted 95 consumers who suffered health damage after taking Kobayashi Pharmaceutical’s health supplements containing red yeast rice ingredients.
According to the Society’s president, Manabu Namba, more than half of these patients sought medical attention due to symptoms such as fatigue and abnormal urine during their initial consultation, which are typical symptoms of Fanconi syndrome. Namba explained that the clinical manifestations of Fanconi syndrome include elevated levels of potassium, phosphate, and uric acid in the patient’s urine, with some patients showing signs of declining kidney function, which was confirmed in most patients.
The survey also revealed that three-quarters of patients showed improvement in symptoms simply by discontinuing the problematic health supplements. Namba emphasized the importance of promptly stopping the use of such supplements and urged the public not to be overly fearful, advising that they seek medical attention if they feel any abnormality in their bodies.
Fanconi syndrome is a group of symptoms caused by abnormal kidney tubule function. Normally, the kidneys filter waste from the blood and excrete them in urine, but in patients with Fanconi syndrome, the kidney tubules are abnormal, leading to the excretion of proteins and minerals that should be reabsorbed into the body, resulting in symptoms such as swelling and fatigue. The condition can worsen and develop into chronic kidney failure.
During the press conference, information was also provided about five consumers who died after taking the problematic health supplements. Three of them had a history of prostate cancer, malignant lymphoma, and other conditions. In terms of age, three were in their 70s, one in their 90s, and the age of the remaining person was not disclosed.
According to data released by the Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare, as of the 9th, 219 consumers who took Kobayashi Pharmaceutical’s problematic health supplements had been hospitalized, and 1,296 had visited medical institutions for treatment.
