Deaths Linked to Red Yeast Rice Supplement Containing Unintended Ingredient.
Kobayashi Pharmaceutical (Osaka City) announced on March 29th that another person has died due to health issues caused by taking a supplement containing “red yeast rice” ingredients. This brings the total number of deaths related to this issue to five.
President Akihiro Kobayashi and others are scheduled to hold a press conference in Osaka City later in the day to explain the situation.
According to the company, they were contacted by the family on the 28th. The deceased had been taking the problematic supplement “Red Yeast Rice CholestHelp” and had a kidney disease.
Initially, the company had stated that the “unintended ingredient” leading to health issues was present in batches manufactured from July to October 2023. However, upon further verification, it was found to be present in products manufactured from April to October 2023, and shipped from July to December 2023. The company had mistakenly described the manufacturing period.
The company’s analysis revealed a ring-like structure in this ingredient similar to that found in mold-producing substances, and they are conducting further analysis in collaboration with multiple university laboratories.
