Massive Sardine Deaths in Amakusa City, Also in Nagasaki – Approximately 90 Tons of Sardines Removed.
On Oct 18th, a significant number of sardines were found dead at a fishing port in Amakusa City, and removal operations continued on the 19th.
It is estimated that around 90 tons of sardines have been removed, and both the prefectural and city authorities in Amakusa are investigating the cause.
The discovery of a large number of sardine carcasses occurred at the Goryo Fishing Port in Gowa-cho, Amakusa City. Local residents spotted the sardine carcasses and promptly informed the city authorities, leading to the initiation of removal operations.
The morning after, approximately 70 individuals, including officials from the prefecture, city, and the fisheries cooperative, gathered at the fishing port. They used large nets to hoist the floating sardine carcasses with cranes and employed shovels and dip nets to assist in the removal process.
Amakusa City Mayor Akiharu Baba stated, “We want to expedite the removal process as much as possible so that the lives of our citizens can return to normal, and we can ensure the recovery of the livelihoods of our fishermen.”
According to Yasutoshi Yamashita, Deputy Director of the Kumamoto Prefecture Fisheries Research Center, “It is believed that the sardines died two to three days ago, and their carcasses are floating only on the inner side of the fishing port. This suggests they may have been chased into the harbor and died due to differences in water temperature, salinity, and oxygen levels.”
It is estimated that approximately 90 tons of sardines have been removed, and Amakusa City aims to determine the disposal method and future actions.
Meanwhile, in Nagasaki Prefecture’s Minamishimabara City, a significant number of sardines were also found dead at a fishing port.
