400 million U.S. N95 masks to be distributed for free next week.
The U.S. government will begin distributing 400 million N95 masks to the population for free next week, as federal officials stress that N95 masks offer better protection than the omicron variant on cloth masks.
According to Fox News, the White House announced today (Wednesday, January 19) that the free distribution of N95 masks will come from the government’s Strategic National Stockpile, which holds more than 750 million high-strength protective masks. The masks will be available at pharmacies and community health centers across the country.
The White House said the free masks will begin shipping this week and distribution later next week. Each person is eligible for three free N95 masks .
This will be the largest distribution of free masks to the public by the U.S. federal government since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. In early 2020, then-President Trump considered a plan to send masks to all Americans at home.
Incumbent President Joe Biden faced mounting criticism this month for the highly-spreading variant of the omicron sweeping the nation, and the decision to mass-distribute free N95 masks because of their cost and availability.
After facing similar criticism over winter shortages of COVID-19 at-home testing kits, the Biden administration yesterday (Tuesday, January 18) also launched a program to provide free COVID-19 testing kits to U.S. households, one family can get for free Four COVID-19 test kits. The first test kits are expected to ship later this month.
