Comprehensive comparison of COVID-19 Omicron and Delta: Omicron infection has less symptoms, faster recovery, but higher likelihood of sore throat and hoarseness.
At present, the new coronavirus mutant Omicron (Omicron) has replaced Delta (Delta) as the main epidemic strain worldwide. Many studies have shown that Omicron is more transmissible, but Omicron is less pathogenic and milder than Delta.
Symptom prevalence, duration, and risk of hospital admission in individuals infected with SARS-CoV – 2 during periods of omicron and delta variant dominance: a prospective observational study from the research paper of the ZOE COVID Study .
The study investigated differences in symptoms after infection with Omicron and Delta in people who were vaccinated between June 2021 and January 2022 .
The results showed a 25% lower likelihood of hospitalization after infection with Omicron compared to Delta (1.9% for Omicron and 2.6% for Delta) .
The risk of anosmia was significantly reduced (17% for Omicrion, 53% for Delta) , but there was a 55% increased risk of sore throat and a 24% increased risk of hoarseness.
For those who received two doses of the vaccine and a booster, symptoms lasted an average of 4.4 days after infection with Omicron, compared with 7.7 days for Delta.
Those who received only two doses of the vaccine had symptoms lasting an average of 8.3 days after infection with Omicron, compared with 9.6 days for Delta.
It is reported that this is the first large-scale peer-reviewed paper comparing symptoms after infection with Omicron and Delta .
This study shows that Omicron is milder, faster recovery from infection, symptoms differ between Omicron and Delta infection, less lower respiratory tract involvement after Omicron infection , lower rates of hospitalization, risk of sore throat and hoarseness Increase.
