Benefits of infection with COVID-19 Omicron: Immunity to Delta increased by 4.4 times.
Research by South African scientists has shown that infection with a new variant of COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019), Omicron, can enhance immunity to the old variant Delta.
Reuters reported that this study covers only a small group of people and has not yet been peer-reviewed, but it found that patients infected with Omicron have increased immunity to the Delta variant, especially those who have been vaccinated.
A total of 33 vaccinated and unvaccinated people were recruited for this analysis, all of whom were infected with the Omicron variant in South Africa. The authors found that 14 days after recruitment of these samples, the degree of neutralization of the Omicron mutant strain increased by 14 times, and the degree of neutralization of the Delta mutant strain also increased by 4.4 times.
The scientists involved in this study stated: “In individuals infected with Omicron, the degree of neutralization of the Delta variant strain increases, which may reduce Delta’s ability to infect those people again.”
Scientists said that the results of this study “consistent with the phenomenon that Omicron is replacing the Delta mutant strain, because it can neutralize Delta’s immunity and reduce the possibility of re-infection with Delta.”
According to these scientists, the possible impact of Omicron’s replacement of Delta depends on whether Omicron’s virulence is lower than that of Delta. “If it is, then the incidence of severe COVID-19 will be reduced, and the impact of infection on individuals and society will be reduced. Interference may be reduced”.
Alex Sigal, a professor at the African Health Research Institute in South Africa, said on Twitter yesterday that if Omicron is less pathogenic, as the experience in South Africa has shown, it “will help drive Delta away.”
According to an earlier South African study, patients infected with Omicron have a lower risk of hospitalization and severe illness than those infected with the Delta variant, but the author said that part of the reason may be due to increased herd immunity.
After the first discovery of Omicron in southern Africa and Hong Kong in November, this variant strain has spread to the world and overloaded hospitals in several countries.
