Can Red Wine Soften Blood Vessels?

The claim that drinking red wine can soften blood vessels because it contains resveratrol is a commonly heard belief, but it is actually a complete “hoax.”

“Resveratrol” is an antioxidant found in grapes and blueberries, discovered by scientists in 1939. Despite being known for nearly 60 years, its remarkable properties were not widely recognized until the late 20th century when a scholar named Dipak Kumar Das elevated resveratrol to a “divine” status.

Dipak Kumar Das, the director of the Cardiovascular Research Center at the University of Connecticut, gained fame for his research on the beneficial properties of resveratrol. In 1990, Das suggested that despite the French consuming unhealthy, high-cholesterol foods, their cardiovascular disease rates were only one-third of those in the United States. He attributed this to resveratrol in wine, sparking widespread curiosity about its benefits.

However, behind the halo, there was deceit and manipulation. According to an investigation at the University of Connecticut, including nearly 150 articles on the effects of resveratrol in red wine, there were allegations of falsified data. In 2012, Dipak Kumar Das was expelled from the University of Connecticut for research misconduct, and numerous reputable scientific journals retracted his papers.

Moreover, relying on alcohol to protect cardiovascular health is not only “unhelpful” but can be harmful.

In August 2018, the prestigious medical journal “The Lancet” pointed out that alcohol directly caused the deaths of 2.8 million people globally. Alcohol consumption is directly associated with various diseases, including cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Numerous studies have confirmed that any amount of alcohol intake is detrimental to the human body. The idea of softening blood vessels through alcohol consumption is unfounded.

Therefore, “The Lancet” recommends that the safest alcohol consumption level is “0,” meaning that abstaining from alcohol is the only beneficial choice for health!
