University Body Trafficking: Funeral Directors Arrested in Spain

Spanish police announced on January 30th that they have arrested four funeral directors in Valencia, southeastern Spain, on suspicion of trafficking bodies to the university’s research department.

The four individuals, including two directors and two employees, are suspected of selling bodies to the university for research purposes at €1,200 (approximately US$1,300) per body. Most of the bodies were believed to be of individuals without relatives, and the suspects allegedly forged documents to obtain bodies from hospitals and elderly care facilities. It is estimated that they have sold at least 11 bodies so far.

Furthermore, the suspects assisted the university in disposing of bodies after research, including cremation and placing body parts in different coffins for cremation.

According to the police, the suspects mentioned that they were actively seeking “deceased individuals without relatives, preferably foreigners.”

There were instances where they persuaded elderly individuals with mental disorders to agree to donate their bodies. These bodies were transported to a different medical facility with a separate consent form, and the funeral directors claimed to have been paid a “higher amount.”

The four individuals are facing charges of fraud and document tampering.
