Dr. Keisuke Saito, Institute of Raptor Medicine in Japan:
“Since it seemed to be in a state of reduced consciousness, I think it was one of the severe neurological symptoms.”
Due to the fear of a drastic decrease in the number of endangered species, research began on administering influenza treatment drugs used by humans to eagles.
After two years of treatment, seven out of the ten protected eagles recovered enough to eat on their own.
Dr. Keisuke Saito said,”I’m just glad they were able to return to the wild. When they were brought in, I really didn’t know what would happen, and they had severe aftereffects, shaking their heads constantly. I never thought their neurological symptoms would improve to the point of being able to fly again.”
It is said to be the world’s first case of recovery with medication and natural return.
As a future task, the Ministry of the Environment is calling for an end to feeding for tourism purposes to prevent eagles from gathering in confined spaces and spreading infection.
