Botulinum Infection: Do not give honey to babies under 1 year old!

Cases of death have occurred, and the Japan Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare is calling for caution.

“It is recommended to give honey to babies after they turn 1 year old.” The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare is calling for caution regarding honey and products containing honey.

Cases of death

According to the Japan Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, when babies under 1 year old eat honey, there is a possibility of developing “infant botulism”.

Botulinum bacteria are bacteria that are widely present in the soil, among other places. When they enter a baby’s body through food, they can cause symptoms such as constipation, decreased sucking ability, loss of energy, changes in crying, and poor head control.

Most cases can be cured with appropriate treatment, but in rare cases, they can be fatal. It is said that in the intestines of adults, botulinum bacteria lose in competition with other intestinal bacteria, so nothing usually happens.

Regarding infant botulism, there have been 3 cases reported as food poisoning by health authorities since 1986, and 16 cases reported by doctors as infant botulism since 1999. In the United States, over 100 cases are reported annually.

The cause of infant botulism is thought to be honey as a food, but there are also cases where infants who have not eaten honey, such as those who drink well water, are affected. The heat resistance of botulinum bacteria (spores) is “120°C for 4 minutes,” so caution is necessary because they do not die with normal heating or cooking.

The Japan Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare is calling for caution, stating, “Do not give honey, honey-containing beverages, sweets, and other foods to babies under any circumstances.”
