NEJM: 1st report on the protection of COVID-19 booster shot was released, and the protection against infection has increased by 11.3 times!
When the US White House and scientists are arguing over whether the third bolus vaccination is or not, data from Israel has provided help.
On September 15, 2021, the most well-known medical journal, the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), published the so-called real-world protection data of the Israeli Ministry of Health’s third dose of vaccination. This study was forecasted by the US media last week.
The study selected BNT162b2 mRNA vaccination data from July to August, and found that 5,193,825 (person-days) received two doses of more than 12 days, 4,439 people were infected; 10,603,410 (person-days) received three doses of people 934 people were infected .
From this calculation, the third dose of vaccination increased the protection against COVID-19 by 11.3 times and the protection against severe COVID-19 by 19.5 times.
However, no matter how good the protection of the vaccine is, if the public is not paying attention, it will not be able to effectively prevent infection in real life. Look at the recent new cases in Israel, and it’s clear at a glance.
Of course, the effectiveness of vaccines in preventing severe illness is very clear. The current case fatality rate in Israel has been reduced to about 0.3% (comparison: flu case fatality rate is 0.1%).
The lower case fatality rate has further contributed to the people’s inattention and carelessness; it’s just that those who haven’t been vaccinated can hardly escape the pursuit of the Delta mutant.
The ACIP of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will vote on September 17 to decide whether to approve and how to implement the third intensive vaccination.
Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other scientists have successively issued articles questioning from an academic perspective the extensive third-dose booster vaccination that the Biden administration wants to promote on September 20.
The Israeli data is a good academic support for the Biden administration.
But in fact, the fight for the third dose of intensive vaccination is basically the government’s need to reduce the infection rate and scientists believe that coexisting with the virus only needs to look at reducing the severity of the disease.
The previous data shows that the protection against infection is reduced within half a year of vaccination; but for most people, the protection against severe illness has not been significantly reduced.
Data from Israel now show that the third dose of intensive vaccination not only significantly reduces infections, but also reduces deaths; this result adds new uncertainty to the CDC’s decision on Friday.
We will continue to follow the latest scientific research data to provide information for friends to make accurate decisions.
