According to a report by the Times of India on the 11th, the Indian New Coronavirus Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) warned that the second-generation Omicron BA. The major subvariant, and the strain is further mutating, may become more transmissible and immune evasion in the future.
Maharashtra’s genome sequencing coordinator, Dr Rajesh Karyakarte, has confirmed that the BA.2.75 variant is “further mutating”, one of which is the BA.2.75.2 variant.
90% of patient samples in Maharashtra currently sequenced samples were found to be BA.2.75 and its sub-lineages.
Last week, Cao Yunlong, an immunology researcher at Peking University, posted on social media that BA.2.75.2 has the strongest immune evasion ability of the strains tested so far, and said that “it is improving by implanting more immune evasion mutations. to compete for dominance.”
Easier to spread
In May of this year, experts first discovered BA.2.75.2 in India and believed that the variant was mutated from BA.2.75. It is reported to be spreading faster in India than other Omicrona variants.
The BA.2.75.2 subtype currently exists in India, Chile, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Spain, Germany and other countries.
Recent data show that Thailand has found one case of BA.2.75.2 variant infection. On the 14th, the Greek National Health Service also issued an announcement saying that the variant was found in the sample test.
Experts point out that BA.2.75.2 is also trying to establish itself among other Omicron sub-variants by forming more mutations.
Another scientist at INSACOG said that global experts are tracking BA.2.75.2. Given that the immune evasion ability of the second-generation variant BA.2.75 is stronger than that of BA.4 and BA.5, this means that the BA.2.75.2 it mutates will be more infectious.
Vaccines to be updated
Experts also warn that subvariants will continue to emerge in the future, which will make older generations of vaccines less effective, which may require the production of second-generation vaccines against newer variants.
The virus will persist into the future, they say, in part because it is getting better at evading immune systems created by vaccines and past infections.
