Shocking Reason Why Doctors Worldwide are Avoiding Bottled Beverages
Invisible microplastics are causing deadly diseases—a newly published study might significantly advance modern medicine by uncovering the link between bottled beverages and strokes.
Risk of Death Increases by 4.5 Times
“I will never drink bottled beverages again!” declared Dr. Saurabh Sethi, an internist from Harvard University, in a viral online video. While this might sound like a bizarre claim, it is becoming a new “norm” among doctors familiar with cutting-edge research.
Between January and March this year, two groundbreaking studies were published in the United States:
- Bottled beverages contain large amounts of microplastics (MP).
- Presence of MP in the body increases the risk of stroke and myocardial infarction.
As a result, many doctors, including Dr. Sethi, have stopped drinking bottled beverages. These studies have shocked many in the medical community, including Dr. Yoichiro Hashimoto from Saiseikai Kumamoto Hospital.
“Smoking is said to increase the risk of stroke by 1.9 times and subarachnoid hemorrhage by 2.9 times. These are high risks, but having MP or even finer nanoparticles (NP) in the body increases the risk of stroke and myocardial infarction death by approximately 4.5 times. The danger level was completely unexpected.
Moreover, the study (2) was published in the ‘New England Journal of Medicine,’ one of the top three most prestigious clinical medicine journals. It wouldn’t be published without solid research backing. Medically speaking, it’s a flawless study.”
How do everyday bottled beverages raise disease risks? Let’s unravel the two studies that have shaken the medical world.
High Risks of Stroke and Myocardial Infarction
Dr. Giuseppe Paolisso, an internist from Campania University in Italy and one of the study’s authors, explained the findings:
“When large plaques (clumps) form from hardened fat in the carotid artery, they are typically removed surgically. Upon examining these removed plaques, about 60% contained MP and NP. Moreover, patients with MP in their plaques showed a higher risk of stroke and myocardial infarction over a follow-up period of about three years.
Generally, when plaques dislodge and travel through the bloodstream, they can block narrow blood vessels, causing strokes or myocardial infarctions. MP and NP tend to stick to hardened arteries, making plaques larger and more prone to breaking off.”
Microplastics are plastic fragments smaller than 5mm, while nanoparticles are 1/1,000,000 to 1/100 of a millimeter in size. These invisible plastic pieces mix into food or float in the air, entering the human body through various routes and causing severe diseases.
Traveling through the Bloodstream to the Lungs and Liver
However, Dr. Beizhan Yang, an associate professor at Columbia University and one of the authors of the first study, stated, “Among the various routes through which MP enter the body, bottled beverages pose the highest risk.”
“Our research showed that an average of 240,000 MP and NP are found in one liter of bottled beverages. In comparison, the same amount of seawater contains about 10,000 particles, making this a shocking figure.
When exposed to heat or ultraviolet rays, bottled plastics undergo chemical reactions that leach MP and NP into the contents. Additionally, simply opening and closing the cap can cause fragments to mix in due to friction with the bottle itself.”
Increasing the Risk of Other Diseases
Thus, MP and NP can cause fatal diseases like stroke and myocardial infarction. However, these aren’t the only diseases whose risks are heightened. In a follow-up article titled “Do Bottled Beverages Increase the Risk of Stroke, Cancer, and Liver Cirrhosis? The Astonishing Mechanism,” other risks are also discussed.
