Ardern said at a press conference that day that there were cases of community transmission of the Omicron strain in New Zealand.

A family travelled to Auckland on the North Island earlier this month for events, including a wedding of 100, before flying back to Nelson on the South Island.

Nine people, including the above family members and a flight attendant, tested positive for the new coronavirus and were confirmed to be infected with the Omicron strain.

Ardern said the number of people who had been in contact with infected households at the event was “well over 100”, meaning the Omicron strain was spreading in Auckland and possibly in the Nelson-Marlborough area.

Ardern decided that New Zealand will enter the “red” epidemic prevention level from 0:00 on the 24th, limit the number of indoor venues such as bars and restaurants, and events such as weddings, and require people to wear masks in public transport and shops.

In addition, after the start of the new semester, students in the fourth grade and above are required to wear masks on campus.

She emphasized that the “red” epidemic prevention level does not mean “closed city”, enterprises can continue to operate, and the public can still visit relatives and friends, and move freely throughout the country.

According to Agence France-Presse, the new epidemic prevention measures will continue at least until the end of next month.

Ardern himself will also be affected by the restrictions. According to the Associated Press, Ardern and his partner, fishing show host Clark Gayford, were scheduled to have their wedding next weekend but have now been postponed.

“My wedding won’t take place (as planned),” Ardern told reporters. “I’m just joining a lot of other New Zealanders who are going through the same thing because of the pandemic, and for anyone who’s been in a similar situation, I feel really bad. Feel sorry.”

New Zealand has banned entry to most international travellers since the outbreak began in March 2020.

The government delayed plans to reopen in phases from mid-January to the end of February this year due to concerns that the spread of the Omicron strain could exacerbate the outbreak.

New Zealand has a population of about 5 million, with more than 15,000 confirmed cases and 52 deaths.

According to Reuters, about 94% of New Zealand’s population over the age of 12 has completed the full course of the COVID-19 vaccine, and about 56% of those eligible for vaccination have received booster shots. New Zealand has recently started vaccinating children aged 5 to 11 against the novel coronavirus.
