After Tonga’s submarine volcano erupted, Australia and New Zealand, both in the South Pacific, sent rescue ships and flights to Tonga.

Surprisingly, a COVID-19 outbreak broke out on the navy warship “Adelaide”, which Australia sent to Tonga for disaster relief.

The governments of Australia and Tonga are discussing how to safely deliver the relief supplies.

According to a report by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation on the 25th, the “Adelaide” set off from Brisbane to Tonga last Friday, carrying relief supplies such as engineering equipment, water and tents, and is scheduled to arrive in Tonga early on the 26th. Australian Defense Minister Dutton confirmed that 23 of the more than 600 crew members on board have been found to be positive for the COVID-19.

Dutton said at a press conference on Tuesday morning, local time, that after communicating with Tonga, the Australian side decided to let the “Adelaide” rescue ship temporarily stay at sea to prevent the spread of the epidemic to Tonga.

Dutton said that the Australian side is currently considering a “contactless” method of delivering relief supplies. The rescue ship may dock in Tonga, but the Australian personnel will not participate in the unloading of the relief supplies. The transport helicopters carried on the warship will deliver the supplies by airdrop.

In fact, this is not the first time that Australia’s disaster relief in Tonga has gone wrong. An Australian defense official said on Friday that an Australian aid flight to Tonga was forced to return after a crew member tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.

The Associated Press reported that since the global outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic, Tonga has only had one confirmed case, and Tonga is one of the few countries in the world without any COVID-19 cases.

Therefore, since the recent natural disasters of volcanic eruptions and tsunamis, although Tonga urgently needs international assistance, it is also very worried that relevant assistance will bring the COVID-19 virus and cause more serious disasters than volcanic eruptions and tsunamis.
