According to official French data, there were 164,828 new confirmed cases in France in the three days from the 25th to the 27th;

the average number of newly confirmed cases in France in a single day has now risen to 71,000, a new high since the end of April. The incidence of the COVID-19 in France continues to rise, and the current incidence rate is 693 infections per 100,000 inhabitants, an increase of 50% compared to the previous week. The positive rate of new coronavirus tests rose to 27.5%, up 18.2% from the previous week.

The cumulative number of confirmed cases in France is now 30,678,541; the cumulative number of deaths is now 149,406.

The number of infected cases of the evolutionary branches BA.2.12.1, BA.4 and BA.5 of the new coronavirus variant Omicron strains circulating in France continued to increase rapidly.

Due to the tightening of the epidemic situation, French Health Minister Bourguignon asked people to resume wearing masks on public transportation on the 27th.

She also believes that the obligation to wear a mask must be re-extended to all “closed places” or places conducive to the spread of the virus.

She said when people see crowded station concourses or carriages, they should know they need to protect themselves and others first.

But Bourguignon also said that wearing masks on public transport has not yet returned to an official mandatory measure.

French officials lifted the mandatory wearing of masks on public transport on May 16.

Referring to the current outbreak, Bourguignon said people should proceed with caution “for the current period”, mainly due to the “obvious rebound” in the number of cases.

She also mentioned that the COVID-19 vaccination process should continue to be accelerated. Bourguignon himself received his fourth dose of the vaccine last week.

Fischer, chairman of France’s steering committee responsible for vaccination, called on vulnerable people over the age of 60 to immediately receive a fourth dose of the vaccine. He said that currently 8.5 million people in France who are eligible for the fourth dose of the vaccine have not been vaccinated, and they should be vaccinated immediately to ensure the level of protection of the vaccine.
