COVID-19 Not Over in China and Deaths Risen Sharply

COVID-19 Not Over in China and Deaths Risen Sharply.

The threat of XBB reappears: the number of deaths from COVID-19 has risen sharply by nearly 6 million fever patients.

The symptoms of “Re-infection” are getting lighter and lighter. Is it unnecessary to vaccinate in the future?

Most people in China have already received the basic immunity of COVID-19 vaccine, is the booster shot a must?

There are fewer and fewer cases of “Re-infection” sequelae. Will it become a “regular flu” in the future?

Obviously not!

COVID-19 infection rate drops  but death rate gradient rises

According to the infection data of COVID-19 Epidemic in June released by China CDC in July, from June 1st to June 30th, 2023, there were 1,968 cases and 239 deaths (including 2 deaths from respiratory failure caused by COVID-19 infection, and 237 deaths from underlying diseases combined with COVID-19 infection).

Reports of New Severe and Death Cases of COVID-19 Infection in China

The number of fever clinics in 31 provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities) across the country has fluctuated from 288,000 on June 1, 2023 to 164,000 on June 30.

The changing trend of the number of patients in fever clinics (consulting rooms) across the country

Judging from the data released by the CDC, the number of people infected with COVID-19 nationwide is gradually declining. However, it is compared with the national COVID-19 infection situation in May of COVID-19 epidemic released by China CDC in June.

  • The number of deaths rose from 164 in May (May 1-May 31) to 239 in June (June 1-June 30) .
  • XBB and its subspecies increased from 84.6% from May 1st to May 7th to 92.4% from May 22nd to May 28th , and in June to the 22nd week of 2023 (May 29th-May 28th) 94.7% on June 4) , and increased to 96.2% in the 26th week (June 26-July 2) .

These data are enough to prove that XBB mutant strains gradually have stronger immune escape ability. And some special groups are more harmful after infection!

The latest COVID-19 vaccination plan and changes in key populations

On August 1, the Comprehensive Team of the State Council’s Joint Prevention and Control Mechanism for COVID-19 Infection issued the “Recent COVID-19 Vaccination Work Plan for Key Populations”.

People with serious underlying diseases, people with low immune function, people at high risk of infection, and those who have completed basic immunity or have been infected with the COVID-19.

At present, the XBB variant of the COVID-19 has become the main epidemic strain in some countries.

Studies have shown that XBB mutant strains have strong immune escape ability, and the neutralization ability of serum antibodies to XBB mutant strains in the Chinese population is poor, and breakthrough infection is prone to occur. Key populations such as the elderly are more harmful after being infected with XBB variants.

In terms of vaccination intervals, the target population who have completed basic immunization or been infected with the COVID-19 will be 3 to 6 months after the latest vaccination, or 6 months after the latest infection (both cases occur, the most recent one shall be used) prevail), a dose of the inhaled COVID-19 vaccine can be inhaled.

People who have been vaccinated with vaccines containing XBB mutant strain antigen components are not recommended to be vaccinated with other types of vaccines that can be selected in the previously issued vaccination plan at this stage.

People who have not completed basic immunization and have not been infected with the COVID-19 should complete basic immunization first.

In conclusion:

1. The popular strains are still Omicron mutant strains, and the top three are XBB.1.9 and its sub-branches, XBB.1.16 and its sub-branches, XBB.1.5 and its sub-branches;

2. The data show that the prevention effect of mixed immunization (infection + vaccination) is better;

3. People who urgently need to be vaccinated and boosted immunity: people aged 60 and above or people aged 18 to 59 with serious underlying diseases, people with low immune function, and people at high risk of infection (such people are not only very prone to repeated infections, but also once infected very dangerous);

4. Stimulating the lung mucosal immune response may be the most effective way to prevent infection and transmission.

Note: The vaccination procedure is subject to the latest national policy
