US$300K: Compensation Granted as Woman Dies Following COVID-19 Vaccination
A Japanese woman in her 40s in Hakodate City, Hokkaido, who died after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, is set to receive approximately 44 million yen (about US$300K) in compensation under the national relief system.
The city acknowledges that the causal relationship between the vaccine and the woman’s death cannot be denied.
According to Hakodate City, the bereaved family of the woman in her 40s, who died after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine in the city, applied for the national “Vaccination Health Damage Relief System” through the city. The Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare recognized that the causal relationship could not be denied.
The city plans to provide approximately 44 million yen, including a one-time death benefit and funeral expenses.
The death occurred in the fiscal year 2022, and the specific type of vaccine has not been disclosed.
Hakodate City has had multiple citizens in the past who received relief under the national system due to outpatient treatment, but this is the first instance of such relief being granted for a death.

Family Files Lawsuit Against Government and Municipality Over COVID Emergency Transport: “Put an End to a World Where People Die Without Treatment”

“Please put an end to a world where we can’t get any treatment and end up dying,” pleads the grieving family.
According to the complaint, a 23-year-old man from Funabashi City, Chiba Prefecture, was infected with the novel coronavirus in August 2021. He requested emergency transport five times, but the destination was not determined. Despite having underlying conditions that increased the risk of severe illness, he went into cardiac arrest without being promptly transported and subsequently died.
The family alleges that the man’s opportunity for timely transport and appropriate treatment was taken away, leading to his death. As a result, they have initiated a lawsuit seeking approximately 130 million yen in damages from the national government, Chiba Prefecture, and Funabashi City.
According to the attorney representing the family, this is believed to be the first lawsuit against the national and prefectural governments regarding emergency transport for COVID-19. (ANN News)
