Japan compensated about US$291K For 4th Death After receiving COVID-19 Vaccine
Compensation Approved by the Government for a Nagasaki Resident Who Died After Receiving COVID-19 Vaccine, Fourth Case in Nagasaki Prefecture, news at 11/1 (Wednesday) 19:00 JST.
A total of over 44 million yen in compensation from the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare for health damage has been approved for a Nagasaki city resident who died after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. This marks the fourth case in the prefecture and the first in Nagasaki city to receive such recognition.
The individual recognized is a Nagasaki city resident who passed away after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. They will receive a one-time death benefit of 44.2 million yen, along with a funeral expense of 212,000 yen, resulting in a total compensation of 44.41 million yen.
This compensation is provided under the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare’s health damage relief system based on the Vaccination Law. The reason for the minister’s recognition is attributed to the fact that it cannot be denied that the vaccine may have played a role in the individual’s cause of death.
In Nagasaki city, a total of 25 cases, including two one-time death benefits and funeral expenses, as well as 23 cases of medical expenses and medical allowances, have been submitted to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare from citizens between the fiscal year 2021 and the current fiscal year. Among the two cases submitted for one-time death benefits and funeral expenses, one has been approved for the first time, while the other is pending. On the other hand, out of the 23 applications related to medical expenses and medical allowances, 13 have been approved, 2 denied, and 8 are awaiting results, with the possibility that they may be linked to the COVID-19 vaccine.
For the minister’s recognition, a third-party panel known as the Disease and Disability Recognition Examination Committee examines causality. Thirteen applications for one-time death benefits and funeral expenses have been submitted to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare in the prefecture so far. This recent recognition is the fourth case in the prefecture, following Chonoshima Town, Sasebo City, and Omura City.
The compensation will be provided to the bereaved family from Nagasaki city and will be fully covered by the national treasury. Applications for the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare’s health damage relief compensation are accepted in municipalities where residents were registered when they received their vaccinations, as noted on their resident registry.
