The difference between Amoxicillin and Cephalosporins

The difference between Amoxicillin and Cephalosporins

The difference between Amoxicillin and Cephalosporins.  Among the many antibiotics, amoxicillin and cephalosporin have the highest usage rate, but remember not to abuse antibiotics!

Many people don’t actually know much about antibiotics. They think that no matter what kind of drug they take, they can treat inflammation that occurs in the body, so it’s okay to take it casually and match it blindly!

In a sense, amoxicillin and cephalosporin are a class of drugs, because they both belong to the β-lactam antibiotics.

However, the facts are not as simple as you think. Amoxicillin and cephalosporins are different to a certain extent:

1. The two names have different meanings

The amoxicillin that we buy every day actually refers to a specific drug. It is the most widely used oral semi-synthetic penicillin. Although there are different preparations, its composition has not changed. It is an oral broad-spectrum β-lactam antibiotic drug.

However, cephalosporin is different. It is a general term for a class of drugs. There are so many types, it is already a big family!

2. Differences in composition and efficacy

Although they are all β-lactam antibiotics, amoxicillin belongs to the semi-synthetic penicillin group. It has a wide range of effects, and has a certain lethality to many kinds of bacteria, and its bactericidal power is very powerful and relatively fast.

At the same time, the absorption rate of amoxicillin in the human gastrointestinal tract is relatively high, and the treatment effect of urinary system and respiratory system infection is very significant. Because amoxicillin is a kind of penicillin, it is not suitable for people allergic to penicillin;

The main component of cephalosporin is cephalosporin, which is divided into 1, 2, 3, and 4 generations of cephalosporins, and each generation is divided into different drugs.

The role of cephalosporin is mainly to destroy the cell wall where the bacteria exist, and to eliminate the bacteria when they are in the breeding period. It is widely used in urinary system, respiratory tract, digestive tract infections and perioperative infection prevention. Its antibacterial range is wide, The composition of the drug is quite stable, and its allergic reaction is extremely low!

3. The difference in security

The side effects of amoxicillin are generally low, and most patients have no side effects after use, and studies have shown that the side effects caused by amoxicillin are relatively small.

But the cephalosporin is different. The first generation of cephalosporin has a certain degree of renal toxicity. After the second generation of cephalosporin, the toxicity is relatively low, and the third generation of cephalosporin completely got rid of the renal toxicity!

In terms of safety, amoxicillin is a relatively safe and stable drug, while only the second, third and fourth generations of cephalosporins are safe antibiotics.

4. Corresponding symptoms are different

As mentioned above, although both are antibiotic drugs, there are obvious differences in clinical application. Generally, amoxicillin is used for the treatment of inflammation or ulcers of the respiratory system, urinary system, and digestive tract, and treatment of typhoid fever. However, cephalosporin is basically used for bacterial infectious diseases, skin and soft tissue infections, and critical infections.

Finally, I would like to remind everyone: remember not to abuse antibiotics!

The use of any medicine must be carried out under the premise of a doctor’s advice. In particular, antibiotics should not be taken blindly, regardless of whether they will cause side effects, allergic reactions or physical discomfort.

Even if there is no abnormality, taking antibiotics for a long time can easily cause the body to develop resistance, and then it will be more and more difficult to treat bacteria;

Some experts even believe that the abuse of antibiotics may cultivate super-resistant bacteria in the body and lose the value of antibiotics.

According to global research data, nearly hundreds of thousands of people worldwide die from antibiotic-resistant biologic drug-resistant infections every year. You must always keep in mind the principles of scientific medication.
