FDA approved the cheap drug to treat COVID-19, which has been on the market for more than 40 years, with few side effects.

As COVID-19 cases continue to soar in the United States and around the world, there are few options available to treat patients infected with SARS-CoV-2.

But new research from the University of Georgia offers hope for a viable treatment to combat this disease that has claimed the lives of more than 4 million people worldwide.

The study was published in the Science Report of Nature and found that probenecid probenecid has a wide range of antiviral properties, making it not only against SARS-CoV-2 infection, but also against other common and deadly respiratory viruses, such as RSV and flu.

Probenecid is an FDA approved drug, mainly used to treat gout, and it has been widely used in the United States. The drug has been on the market for more than 40 years and has very few side effects.

“There really is nothing you can safely fight against these viruses,” said Ralph Tripp, the lead author of the study and GRA Distinguished Scholar of Vaccines and Therapeutics Research at the UGA School of Veterinary Medicine.

“This antiviral drug is suitable for all RNA respiratory viruses we tested, including SARS-CoV-2. RSV, coronavirus, and influenza are all transmitted in the same season. Most importantly, the use of this oral drug can potentially reduce infections. And disease.”

Stop virus reproduction

Viruses replicate and produce more viruses by absorbing people’s own cells. Probenecid prevents this replication process and prevents the virus from infecting individual cells.

In the clinical development of the pharmaceutical company TrippBio, Tripp demonstrated that the drug can be used as a preventive agent before virus exposure and as a post-exposure treatment for SARS-CoV-2 and influenza in animal models.

The drug has also been shown to be effective against RSV in vitro, and in vivo studies are ongoing.

Although the drug is mainly used after a person has tested positive for the virus, preventive discovery means that people who are known to be exposed may also take the drug to prevent illness.

COVID-19 treatment options are limited

At present, the preferred treatment for severely ill COVID-19 patients is remdesivir and monoclonal antibodies, which can only be administered by intravenous injection.

When COVID patients need them, it is often too late.

Tripp said: “These treatments have a certain effect on SARS-CoV-2, but they are very expensive and difficult to obtain.”

“In fact, due to cost, limited IV use, and lack of access rights, there are actually only a handful of options available. This is of little use to the world.”

On the other hand, probenecid is widely available. Primary care doctors can prescribe medicines for patients, and they can buy them at local pharmacies.

It is common to reuse drugs that have been approved to solve a problem. For example, remdesivir was originally designed to fight the Ebola virus, but when it showed some hope in fighting the coronavirus, it was recruited to fight COVID-19.

In addition to preventing disease before it starts, probenecid may also improve the efficacy of other treatments.

Probenecid has been used to increase the effectiveness of certain antibiotics, so the drug may also be used in combination with other COVID-19 treatments.

Now, researchers are investigating the effect of probenecid dosage on humans against viruses.

TrippBio will begin clinical trials of the drug within this year.

“SARS-CoV-2, RSV and influenza have a huge impact on health systems around the world,” Tripp said.

“Probenecid probenecid has a strong antiviral effect on these viruses, and the effect is safe.”
