Exercise can indeed prevent cancer But at least 5 hours per week.

Large-scale studies have shown that exercise can indeed prevent cancer, but it requires more than 5 hours of exercise per week.

In January 2021, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) released the latest global cancer burden data for 2020. The latest estimated data shows that in 2020, there will be 19.29 million new cancer cases worldwide; in 2020, there will be 9.96 million cancer deaths worldwide. Among them, China has 4.57 million new cancer cases in 2020 and 3 million deaths from cancer in 2020, making it the veritable number one country in cancer.

Globally, due to the increasing aging of the population, as well as smoking, unhealthy diet, obesity, lack of exercise and other reasons. It is estimated that the burden of cancer will increase by 50% in 2040 compared to 2020, and the number of new cancer cases will reach nearly 30 million by then.

Many studies have shown that exercise has a variety of health benefits, helps prevent cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity, and even improves the effectiveness of various cancer treatments.

Recently, researchers from the American Cancer Society published a research paper titled: Proportion of Cancer Cases Attributable to Physical Inactivity by US State, 2013-2016 in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise.

The study showed that 3% of all cancer cases in adults aged 30 and older can be attributed to lack of exercise, and the proportion of women is higher. If moderate-intensity exercise for more than 5 hours a week is performed, it can be prevented every year in the United States alone. There are more than 46,000 cancer cases.

The research team classified and evaluated the number of cancer cases caused by lack of exercise based on the location of the cancer (breast cancer, endometrial cancer, colon cancer, stomach cancer, kidney cancer, esophageal cancer and bladder cancer). Statistics show that 16.9% of gastric cancer, 11.9% of endometrial cancer, 11.0% of kidney cancer, 9.3% of colon cancer, 8.1% of esophageal cancer, 6.5% of female breast cancer and 3.9% of bladder cancer are related to lack of exercise .

In 2020, the number of new cancer cases in China is as high as 4.57 million, ranking first in the world, accounting for 23.6% of the number of new cancer cases in the world, while China’s population only accounts for 18.6% of the world’s population. If according to the data in this study, strengthening exercise can help our country reduce more than 130,000 cancer cases every year, this is undoubtedly a huge number.

The results of this study show the importance of exercise for physical health, but the author also pointed out that, in fact, this kind of recreational exercise has obvious obstacles to some people. For example, some people lack time to exercise due to long working hours, some people cannot afford gym membership fees or purchase fitness equipment, and some women do not have the time and energy to exercise because of their children.

According to the authors of the paper, these findings emphasize the need to encourage exercise as a means of preventing cancer, and implement interventions at the individual and community levels to address recreational exercise disorders caused by lack of time and energy or financial problems.
