What is a knee joint unicondyle replacement surgery?

What is a knee joint unicondyle replacement surgery? Unicondylar replacement surgery is now very mature. For patients who undergo unicondylar replacement to treat knee symptomatic arthritis, we can already be admitted to the hospital on the same day, walk on the ground the same day after surgery, and leave the hospital on the same day. The patient is admitted to the hospital within 12 hours and can go home with his family for dinner at night.

Unicondylar replacement started in the 1970s, but at that time, the failure rate of surgery was relatively high. With the improvement of prosthesis design and the advancement of surgical technology, a series of indications and contraindications for unicondyle replacement surgery were proposed in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and the 10-year use rate of unicondylar replacement exceeded 90%. Currently, unicondylar replacement of the knee is very mature and has become one of the important surgical methods for the treatment of single-compartment knee osteoarthritis.

What is single-compartment knee osteoarthritis?

Having said that, you may not know what a single room is. In fact, it’s easy to understand. “Room” is the house, which divides the knee joint into different areas. The knee joint has three compartments: the medial tibiofemoral compartment, the lateral tibiofemoral compartment and the patellofemoral compartment. As shown in the figure below, with the tibial intercondylar ridge as the boundary, it is divided into medial tibiofemoral compartment and lateral tibiofemoral compartment. The patellofemoral compartment is located between the femur and the patella.

As shown in the figure below, knee osteoarthritis involves the medial compartment, and the lateral compartment has no subchondral bone sclerosis, joint space narrowing, and osteophyte formation.

The following picture shows the knee X-rays of the patient before and after the operation. The worn knee joint was replaced by a prosthesis to solve the patient’s knee arthritis symptoms.

Unicondylar replacement surgery is now very mature. Why can we do this? Because we will carefully evaluate the patient’s condition before the operation, communicate with the patient in detail, and inform the patient of the operation and the detailed precautions after the operation. During the patient’s hospitalization, we have a mature process to work hard on every detail.
