On September 17, 2020, Mayo Medical Center , Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and other top international medical research institutions cooperated to publish research papers in the top medical journal JAMA Oncology .

And patients with metastatic colorectal cancer, those who drank 2-3 cups of coffee a day had longer overall survival and a lower risk of cancer progression, and those who drank 4 cups of coffee a day had greater benefits.

In August 2020, a number of Australian research institutions cooperated and published a paper in the journal Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics [1] .

Through the analysis of the global burden of disease data set, it was shown that with the increase of coffee intake, liver cancer-related deaths worldwide.

Specifically, if everyone in the world drank at least two cups of coffee a day, the number of deaths from liver cancer worldwide would be reduced by more than 450,000, and if everyone in the world drank at least four cups of coffee a day, the number of deaths from liver cancer would be will be reduced by more than 720,000.

On July 23, 2020, the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), the first of the four major medical journals, published a review paper titled : Coffee, Caffeine, and Health [2] .

The paper pointed out that there is substantial evidence that drinking coffee does not increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer, and drinking 3 to 5 cups of coffee a day is associated with a reduced risk of several chronic diseases .

Drinking more coffee linked to longer life in colorectal cancer patients

 

 

On September 17, 2020, the Mayo Medical Center , Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and other top international medical research institutions cooperated and published a paper entitled: Association of Coffee Intake With Survival in Patients With Advanced or Metastatic in the top medical journal JAMA Oncology Colorectal Cancer research paper [3] .

 

The research team further analyzed observational data from a large clinical trial of colorectal cancer patients and found that among 1,171 patients with metastatic colorectal cancer who received treatment, those who drank 2-3 cups of coffee a day had longer overall survival and cancer.

The risk of exacerbation was lower, and the benefit was greater for patients who drank 4 cups of coffee a day.

The paper’s data come from a phase III clinical trial comparing the addition of cetuximab and/or bevacizumab to standard chemotherapy in patients with previously untreated locally advanced or metastatic colorectal cancer.

As part of the clinical trial, the researchers asked these patients about their dietary intake, including coffee intake, through questionnaires.

Data were collected from October 27, 2005, to January 18, 2018, and the researchers correlated the data with information on the progression of the cancer after treatment.

 

Several compounds in coffee have previously been known to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and potentially cancer-effective properties, and epidemiological studies have found that increased coffee intake is associated with improved survival in patients with advanced colorectal cancer, but it is not yet known.

Evidence for the association between caffeine deprivation and survival in patients with metastatic disease.

The researchers found that patients who drank 2-3 cups of coffee a day had longer overall survival and a lower risk of cancer progression compared with patients who drank no coffee, and those who drank 4 cups a day had greater benefits.

Coffee intake and progression-free survival in colorectal cancer patients

 

 

The findings could establish a link between coffee drinking and a reduced risk of cancer development and death in people with colorectal cancer, but the data were insufficient to establish a cause-and-effect relationship, the researchers said .

Therefore, it is too early to recommend drinking more coffee as a potential treatment for colorectal cancer, but this study shows that drinking coffee is not only harmless, but likely has many benefits.

 

Finally, the study’s corresponding author Kimmie Ng said the study further supports the importance of diet and other modifiable factors in the treatment of colorectal cancer patients.

Further research is now needed to determine whether there is a causal relationship between coffee intake and improved outcomes in colorectal patients, and which substances in coffee are responsible for this benefit.
