Why are cancers on the rise in young people?

On March 16, 2023 ,  researchers from Harvard Medical School published an opinion article entitled ” A common cancer at an uncommon age ” in Science magazine.

By analyzing the reasons for the rapid growth of early-onset colorectal cancer, they proposed an urgent need to be paid attention to. The question “Why is cancer on the rise in young people ? ” .

The author believes that sedentary and other unhealthy lifestyles, obesity and metabolic syndrome are important reasons for the increase in the incidence of colorectal cancer ; secondly, genetic factors, environmental pollution, antibiotic abuse and higher caesarean section, etc. Increased incidence of incentives can not be ignored .

Why is cancer on the rise in young people?

There are several possible reasons why cancer rates are increasing among young people:

Lifestyle factors:

An unhealthy lifestyle that includes a diet high in processed foods and low in fruits and vegetables, lack of physical activity, and exposure to environmental toxins like tobacco smoke, air pollution, and chemicals in food and water can increase the risk of cancer.

Genetics:

Some types of cancer are linked to genetic mutations that can be inherited from parents. Mutations in genes that control cell growth and division can lead to the development of cancer.

Delayed childbearing:

Women who delay childbearing until their 30s or 40s may have a higher risk of breast and ovarian cancer. This may be because the number of menstrual cycles a woman has over her lifetime is a risk factor for these cancers.

Increased detection:

Advances in medical technology and screening techniques may be leading to earlier detection of cancer in young people.

Changing demographics:

As the population ages, cancer rates are expected to increase. However, the recent rise in cancer rates among young people cannot be fully explained by demographic changes alone.

It’s important to note that while cancer rates are increasing in young people, overall cancer incidence and mortality rates are still higher in older age groups.

If you are concerned about your risk of cancer, it’s important to speak with your healthcare provider about your personal risk factors and any screening tests that may be recommended.

For early-onset colorectal cancer, researchers at Harvard Medical School recommend adjusting the screening age for CRC to 45 years old.

Alternatively, early detection using blood-based biomarkers also needs to be considered.

But more importantly, young people need to love their bodies.  A healthy life will give you more safety and protection.

These factors that are prone to cancer are not the predisposing factors of metabolic syndrome such as high blood pressure and diabetes?

Behind the frequent occurrence of stroke and sudden death in young people is irregular life and diet; addressing these factors is crucial to reducing the incidence of cancer in young people.

Public health initiatives aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles, reducing exposure to environmental pollutants, and improving access to healthcare and early detection can help moderate the rise in cancer cases in younger populations.
