On December 28, an explosion occurred in a hospital in Ukraine, resulting in 3 deaths and 4 severe burns. The cause of the explosion was that a medical staff lit a candle in the ICU to mourn the deceased of the COVID-19, and the oxygen generator was ignited.

The accident occurred at the Central Hospital of Kosov District in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, Ukraine.

According to the local emergency services department, when the accident occurred, a medical staff member of the hospital was lighting candles in the intensive care unit according to local traditions to mourn the recent death of a patient who suffered from COVID-19 pneumonia in the intensive care unit.

However, because there were still 5 medical oxygen generators in the intensive care unit at the time, these devices started to burn immediately after the candles were lit, and exploded, which caused a fire.

“Ignorance of the basic laws of physics and disregard for safety rules resulted in irreparable losses,” local officials said, describing the accident as a “terrible mistake.”

According to local officials, the accident caused serious burns to 4 people, 3 of whom were doctors. In addition, three people, a 76-year-old man and two women, 58 and 76 years old, were killed in the accident. Among them, 2 of the victims were hospital patients.

Currently, the local prosecutor’s office is further investigating the accident. The National Emergency Agency of Ukraine stated that it will conduct fire safety inspections on medical institutions across the country.

Media “The Sun” mentioned in the report of the accident that in Ukraine, due to non-compliance with safety regulations and aging infrastructure, fatal fire accidents occur more frequently.

In February of this year, an oxygen explosion occurred in a hospital in Chernivtsi, Ukraine, resulting in the death of one patient with COVID-19 pneumonia and the injury of another.

In the same month, a fire broke out in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Zaporozhye, Ukraine that was treating patients with COVID-19, killing 4 people.

In September of this year, a fire broke out in a temporary hospital in North Macedonia that treated patients with COVID-19s, killing at least 14 people.

After the accident, the North Macedonian government announced three days of national mourning for the victims.
